Shireen Lee, born in 1973 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Shireen Lee has carved a notable path in the world of art, with a career spanning decades and a commitment to continuous learning.
In 1997, Lee earned her Bachelor’s degree in Town & Regional Planning from the University of Technology Malaysia. However, her artistic journey began earlier, from 1983 to 1986, when she undertook fundamental studies in watercolour painting under the guidance of artist Tan Sik Yew. Yew, a graduate of the Singapore Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1967, laid the foundation for Lee’s artistic skills. Furthering her expertise, from 1987 to 1988, Lee engaged in advanced studies in watercolour painting under the tutelage of Tan Hong Lee, a distinguished artist with credentials from the Canberra Institute of Arts Australia (1990) and KLCA (1986).
Lee’s commitment to a comprehensive understanding of art led her to delve into art history and the theory of Western art from 2004 to 2009. Under the mentorship of Mr. Tan Tong, a graduate of Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts Paris (ENSBA) in 1975, she gained insights that enriched her artistic perspective.
Since 2004, Shireen Lee has been a full-time artist, dedicating herself to the exploration and expression of artistic ideas. In a pivotal period from 2009 to March 2012, she was based in Fukuoka, Japan, where her art undoubtedly absorbed diverse cultural influences.
Notably, Lee expanded her involvement in the art world by venturing into curatorial work for art exhibitions from 2014 onwards. This demonstrated her commitment not only to her artistic endeavors but also to the broader artistic community.
Shireen Lee’s talent has been recognized through various awards. In 2007, she received the Distinction Award in the Malaysia Art Competition organized by the Johor Art Society and Renewed Group of Company. Further acclaim followed in 2011, with a Distinction Award in The 15th Fukuoka City Botanical Art Contest organized by the Fukuoka City Botanical Garden of Japan. Her recent achievement includes an Incentive Award in the Shah Alam Gallery Open Exhibition 2021.
Shireen Lee’s journey in art is a testament to her dedication to continuous learning, cultural exploration, and her significant contributions to the art world. As a full-time artist and curator, she continues to make an impact on the artistic landscape.
