Tew Nai Tong (1936-2013) was a Malaysian artist known for his contributions to the art world. He received his formal art education at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1956 to 1958. Later, he continued his studies at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in France from 1967 to 1968.
Throughout his career, Tew Nai Tong held several solo exhibitions at prestigious venues such as the British Council in Kuala Lumpur (1964), the National Library in Singapore (1978), Art Folio in Singapore (2000), and the Cape of Good Hope Art Gallery in Singapore (2008). He was also honoured with a retrospective exhibition at the National Art Gallery in Kuala Lumpur (2007).
Tew Nai Tong’s artistic talents were recognized through numerous awards and accolades. Some of his notable awards include the Second Prize in the Chartered Bank Mural Design Competition (1964), the Shell Watercolour Award (1981), the Best Award from Esso (1982), the Dunlop Watercolour Awards (1983), and the Grand Prize in the Asia Art Award (Malaysia) held in Seoul, Korea (2009).
His artistic style explored various themes, including the Battle for Identity, Village Life Series, and Fantasy Series. Tew Nai Tong’s work left a lasting impact on the art scene, and his contributions continue to be celebrated and appreciated by art enthusiasts.
